What Is International Health Insurance for Expats?
International health insurance for expats covers medical expenses and provides the security expatriates need while living abroad. It typically covers healthcare in your country of residence and in other countries.
This global coverage matters because your host country may not always offer the international standard of medical care required to treat your condition. Having the freedom to choose where you receive treatment is especially important for long-term care. Many expatriates prefer to return to their home country for treatment, in a familiar environment and language.
That flexibility is one of the main advantages of expat health insurance.
How to Choose Expat Health Insurance
There is no single international standard for expat health insurance, and many policies can look similar in brochures. However, if you do not review the policy wording—especially the terms and conditions and the detailed benefits—you will not be able to compare plans properly or understand their limitations.
Without reading the full documentation, it can be difficult to explain price differences when the brochures appear nearly identical. Many factors that may not be clearly highlighted in the summary will affect your premium and, more importantly, your coverage when you need it most. For example:
- Will the plan provide long-term protection?
- Does it cover chronic conditions?
- What about elective treatment in high-cost medical facilities?
- Is medical evacuation included, and can you be transferred to the nearest country with higher medical standards?
It is also important to work with professionals who understand your situation and know the true cost of medical treatment in your country of residence, so you can receive the most appropriate advice.
How to Get Insured as an Expat
Having a choice between several plans is a real advantage. But do you have the time—and the expertise—to review them all and select the one that truly fits your situation? That is why it is important to work with an insurance intermediary who understands your needs and can recommend the right solution.
Since 2008, Expatmedicare has been advising expatriates worldwide on their insurance needs. Speak with one of our advisers to find the most suitable plan for you and your family.

Local customs and rules vary from country to country. However, keep in mind these basic rules:
- An expat health insurance might not be mandatory in a specific country, but advisable. Without an insurance, you won’t be able to access hospitals, clinics, or emergency services. Unless you pay upfront.
- While most private hospitals and clinics may require payment upfront (followed by reimbursement from the insurance provider), some international hospitals may offer direct billing services.
- Some countries require visitors to have certain vaccinations before they arrive in their country.
