We are excited to announce the release of Looking Forward to (re)Centre and Looking Back to (re)Centre programming videos!
Looking Back to (re)Centre
Looking Back to (re)Centre is a national digital storytelling initiative that centres the voices and experiences of established Indigenous artist-educators from across so-called Canada. Rooted in the understanding that education is a powerful site of transformation, the project invited 14 mentors to reflect on how they have navigated, challenged, and reshaped systems of learning and knowledge exchange.
Through their stories, the project honours the depth of Indigenous pedagogies, fosters intergenerational connection, and sparks dialogue on the role of artistry in education. These videos stand as both archive and offering, deepening understandings of Indigenous worldviews and imagining new possibilities for learning.
We extend our deepest thanks to the 14 mentors whose creativity, insight, and leadership brought this project to life: Christine Genier, Elaine Bomberry, Garret C. Smith, Jasyn Lucas, Jesse Campbell, Justin Neal, Kimberly Halcrow, Neepekan Hunt, Nova Courchene, Renata Meconse, Shanley Spence, Taylor McArthur, Victoria Perrie, and Yves Sioui Durand.
Looking Forward to (re)Centre
Looking Forward to (re)Centre is a national digital storytelling and creative expression initiative that centres the voices of emerging Indigenous artists. Featuring those new to their practice, current students, and recent graduates, the project explores how Indigenous people engage with artistic learning, mentorship, and evolving educational spaces.
Each of the 14 artists created a 5–7 minute digital or filmed work reflecting on their personal journeys, whether through formal institutions, community teachings, or traditional knowledge systems.
This initiative celebrates the next generation of Indigenous creators as they reclaim, reimagine, and revitalize artistic expression. It contributes to ongoing conversations about Indigenous presence, visibility, and leadership in both artistic and educational contexts.
We are grateful to the 14 artists whose bold visions and reflections shaped this project: Alicia Hunt, Brit Johnson, Brittany LaPlante, Desirée Leverenz, Dez Meade, Isabelle James-Walker, Julia Ross, Katerina Paypompee, Kathleen Starr, Kole Durnford, Mairi Brascoupé, Sheldon Stockdale, Tyler J. Sloane, and Tyra Ashauntie.
As this project comes to a close, we want to take a moment to pause, reflect, and honour the journey so far.
We are deeply grateful to our community of artists, advisors, and partners who have generously shared their time, knowledge, and spirit with us over the past few years. As we celebrate what we’ve built together, we’re also looking ahead.
We’re excited to announce that we’ll be hosting a gathering later this year to envision the next chapter: together.
We’ll be sharing more details soon, follow us on social media for updates!
Thank you for your support!
