There is a great mystery at the heart of our lives. We spend so much time tending to our responsibilities, our plans, our worries, and our identities that we can forget to ask the most fundamental question: Who am I?
After living several years as a monk, including a year long silent retreat, I returned home from Asia carrying the fruits of deep practice. I felt open-hearted, trusting, and free. I had spent countless hours in meditation, working through fear, forgiveness, and old wounds. I thought I had it all figured out. And then after a few months back, I fell in love.
Sooner or later, life brings each of us to places we never planned to visit. Illness, loss, uncertainty, aging, disappointment—no amount of wisdom can exempt us from being human. What changes through practice is not that fear disappears, but that we learn we don't have to be ruled by it.
