WHAT WE OFFER

Personalized psychiatry for an eating disorder

We understand that recovering from an eating disorder can look different for everyone. That’s why our psychiatric providers take time to understand your symptoms, your history, and your goals, so your treatment plan actually works for you.

You’ll also benefit from same- or next-day appointments, a responsive care team, and simple billing, all designed to help you stay supported and on track.

A psychiatric evaluation

We start with a comprehensive assessment to get the full picture of your mental and physical health. Your psychiatric nurse practitioner will ask about your eating behaviors, mood, history, and any co-occurring conditions to tailor your treatment to you.

Answers through diagnostic testing

Our psychiatric team uses expert-guided assessments to better understand what you’re experiencing. Comprehensive testing can be especially helpful when it seems like another condition like anxiety, depression, OCD, or trauma could also present.

Responsive medication management

If medications could help alleviate symptoms or aid in recovery, we’ll walk through your options. We regularly monitor and adjust medications to make sure your treatment is safe, effective, and aligned with your needs.

Treating the whole you

While therapy isn’t our core service, we may integrate it briefly during appointments or provide referrals for trusted therapists. Many people benefit from combining psychiatric care with therapeutic tools.

MEDICATION FOR EATING DISORDERS

Commonly used prescription medications

While there’s no one-size-fits-all prescription for an eating disorder, the right medication can help regulate mood, reduce binge episodes, and support your recovery, especially when co-occurring conditions like anxiety or depression are part of the picture.

Impulse regulators for eating disorders
Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) – The only FDA-approved medication for binge eating disorder, helping improve impulse control and reduce binge episodes.
Topamax (topiramate) – Sometimes used off-label to reduce bingeing or purging behaviors, though it may have cognitive side effects.
Appetite and mood support medications for eating disorders
Remeron (mirtazapine) – Sometimes used to boost appetite, support sleep, and treat depression or anxiety.
Wellbutrin (bupropion) – May be considered in select cases, but it’s typically avoided in bulimia due to seizure risk.
Other meds that may be prescribed for eating disorders
Prozac (fluoxetine) – FDA-approved for bulimia nervosa at higher doses. It can help reduce binge-purge cycles and support mood regulation.
Zoloft (sertraline) – May help with anxiety, depression, or obsessive thoughts that can often accompany eating disorders.
Lexapro (escitalopram) – Often prescribed to manage co-occurring anxiety or depression.
Effexor XR (venlafaxine) – An SNRI option for mood and anxiety symptoms.
Zyprexa (olanzapine) – Occasionally used in anorexia cases to support weight gain, reduce obsessive thinking, and ease anxiety.

Your provider will work with you to choose a medication that fits your needs, symptoms, and treatment goals.

FAQs

Common questions about eating disorders

It’s completely normal to have questions about eating disorders, especially when symptoms are often hidden, minimized, or misunderstood. We’re here to help you get clarity.

There’s no single cause. Genetics, brain chemistry, trauma, societal pressures, and personal experiences can all play a role. People of any age, background, or gender can be affected — even those who seem outwardly healthy. If food and body image issues are interfering with your life, you deserve care.

Anorexia is characterized by extreme restriction of food, intense fear of weight gain, and a distorted body image. People may become dangerously underweight or develop severe medical complications. There are two subtypes:

  • Restrictive: Severe calorie restriction, often paired with excessive exercise.
  • Binge-purge: Involves restricting plus cycles of bingeing and purging.

Bulimia involves cycles of binge eating followed by purging (vomiting, laxative use, or extreme exercise). People with bulimia may appear to be a “normal” weight or healthy, but they can experience serious complications like dehydration, heart problems, digestive issues, gastrointestinal problems, or tooth decay.

Binge-eating disorder involves episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short period, often consuming more than what feels comfortable and feeling unable to stop. Unlike bulimia, it doesn’t involve purging, but it can take a toll on both mental and physical health over time. It’s a treatable condition and doesn’t have to be managed alone.

Our providers use a mix of clinical interviews, symptom assessments, and physical health reviews to reach a diagnosis. We’ll ask about your relationship with food, body image, and any co-occurring symptoms like anxiety or depression. Diagnosis is collaborative, non-judgmental, and compassionate.

We focus on psychiatric care, meaning your treatment starts with a comprehensive evaluation and may include medications that address underlying symptoms.

We don’t treat eating disorders through meal plans or weight goals, but rather support mental and emotional stability through medication management and, when appropriate, brief psychotherapy.

If long-term therapy would be beneficial, we’re happy to refer you to trusted partners.
