DIY Flooring or Professional Installation?

by Queensland Flooring Centre

When it comes to installing new flooring, you have two choices: DIY installation or hiring a professional flooring installer. While tackling a flooring project yourself can be a great way to save money, there are several factors to consider before making your decision. Let’s break down the pros and cons to help you decide!

What is DIY Flooring Installation?

For this blog, we define DIY installation as anyone installing flooring without hiring a professional flooring store installer. This could mean:

  • Installing it yourself with online tutorials and manufacturer guides

  • Having a friend or family member help out

  • Hiring an independent installer from online platforms like Facebook Marketplace

If you’re handy with tools and confident in your abilities, DIY installation could save you money—but there are key risks to consider.

Pros & Cons of DIY Flooring Installation

Potential cost savings – Avoid professional labour costs.
Flexible timing – Work at your own pace without scheduling installers.
Personal satisfaction – Complete the project yourself. and enjoy the reward of hands-on work.

⚠️ No professional backup – If something goes wrong, fixing mistakes can be costly.
⚠️ Subfloor challenges – Many DIY installers lack the right tools and skills for levelling.
⚠️ Warranty risks – Some flooring manufacturers require professional installation for full warranty coverage.

Will DIY Installation Affect My Flooring Warranty?

The answer is yes and no.

  • Product Warranty: If a DIY project is installed correctly and the product fails due to manufacturing defects, most manufacturers will still honour the product warranty and replace faulty planks.

  • Labour Costs: However, manufacturers are not required by law to cover the labour cost of removing and reinstalling faulty planks in DIY installations. Many flooring brands only cover labour costs for professionally installed floors.

Floor Preparation: The Key to a Long-Lasting Floor

One of the biggest mistakes DIY installers make is installing flooring over an uneven or unsuitable subfloor. This can lead to:

  • Warping, lifting, or shrinking

  • Cracking or breaking planks

  • An uneven or unstable finish

A professional installer has the right tools to level your subfloor and ensure a flawless installation. Ask yourself:

  • Do I have a grinder, sander, or floor leveler if needed?

  • Do I know which subfloors are suitable for my chosen flooring type?

  • Am I prepared for unexpected challenges?

If you’re unsure, a professional installer can help prevent costly mistakes and repairs down the track.
