Hanezu Odori | はねず踊り

The Hanezu Odori at Zuishin-in Temple is a vibrant revival of an ancient folk tradition, brought back to life in 1973 after vanishing during the Taisho era. Held on the last Sunday of March, the festival celebrates the arrival of spring and honors the legendary 9th century poet Ono no Komachi, who is said to have resided at this temple. The event is deeply rooted in Heian-period aesthetics, specifically centered around the hanezu plum blossoms, a pale pink variety that was more highly prized for flower viewing than cherry blossoms during that era.

The performance features local schoolgirls dressed in striking "hanezu" pink traditional costumes and woven straw hats, dancing to the rhythmic sounds of koto music and chanting. The choreography tells the poignant "Tale of One Hundred Nights," the legend of Fukakusa no Shosho, a suitor who visited Komachi for 99 consecutive nights to prove his love, only to die on the final night. This charming yet soulful dance is followed by the Zuishin Imayo, where teenage performers in shirabyoshi (Heian-era entertainer) attire perform a refined, classical piece, creating a bridge between local folklore and high-court culture.

This performance serves as the primary inspiration for the "Flower Viewing" aesthetic found in many historical anime and manga, where the fleeting beauty of plum blossoms symbolizes the transient nature of youth and love. You are seeing the living manifestation of the Heian-kyo "mono no aware" philosophy, specifically the bittersweet appreciation of things that fade quickly. Before heading back to the subway, make sure to view the temple's sliding door paintings (fusuma-e), which depict Komachi's life in dazzling, modern hot-pink hues, offering a 21st-century artistic tribute to the ancient poetess.
