Hatsu-Kōbō (First Flea Market)

This sprawling open-air bazaar at Tō-ji Temple transforms the grounds of the UNESCO World Heritage site into a massive "treasure hunt" with over 1,000 stalls. The tradition is over 700 years old, originally starting as a way for pilgrims to honor the monk Kūkai, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. While the market happens every month, this first one of the year is special. You’ll feel a much higher level of energy as locals crowd around the base of Japan’s tallest wooden pagoda to find unique items that might bring them good luck for the rest of 2026.

You’ll be digging through an incredible mix of goods, from high-end Edo-period antiques and ceramics to piles of vintage kimono that you can grab for a few hundred yen. This is one of the rare spots in Kyoto where you’re actually expected to haggle, so don't be shy about negotiating with the sellers to get a better price. If you’re a serious collector looking for rare coins or traditional woodcarvings, you’ll want to get there at dawn. That’s when the real pros show up to pick over the best finds before the general crowds arrive.

When the January chill starts to get to you, follow the smell of woodsmoke and incense toward the food stalls. You can grab a bowl of hot oden or some freshly grilled yakisoba to fuel up for more browsing. You aren't just shopping here; you’re joining a tradition that’s stayed basically the same since the medieval era. Before you head back into the city, follow the locals over to the Mie-dō hall to light some incense for Kūkai. It’s a great way to see the spiritual side of the temple that makes this market so different from any other.
