Inari Matsuri Shinko-sai | 稲荷祭 神幸祭
The Inari Matsuri Shinko-sai (稲荷祭 神幸祭) at Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) is the most significant event for the shrine, marking the period when the five resident deities descend from the sacred Inariyama (稲荷山) mountain to visit the human world. This tradition dates back over a thousand years to the Heian Period, serving as a divine inspection of the city and a prayer for a bountiful harvest. While the shrine is famous for its thousand torii gates, this specific festival shifts the focus to the Ujiko (氏子), the local parishioners, who welcome the gods into their neighborhoods to ensure protection and prosperity for the coming year.
The visual centerpiece of the ritual is the departure of five massive, gold-leafed Mikoshi (神輿), which are portable shrines that house the spirits of the Inari deities. You will see these heavy, ornate structures carried by hundreds of men in traditional Happi (法被) coats, shouting rhythmic chants to coordinate their strength. The procession is led by Guji (宮司) high priests on horseback and accompanied by the haunting sound of Gagaku (雅楽) court music. A unique feature of this festival is the Shichijo-fuda (七条札) ceremony, where the palanquins stop at specific ritual points to receive offerings of sakaki branches and sake from the local community.
The destination of this grand parade is the Otabisho (御旅所), a temporary "resting place" near Kyoto Station where the deities remain for several weeks. This site becomes a spiritual hub for the city, filled with the scent of incense and the glow of hundreds of lanterns. Legend suggests that the Kami (神) specifically enjoy the bustling energy of the marketplace during this stay, bridging the gap between the ancient mountain worship and the daily lives of modern merchants. Before the gods return to the mountain, visitors often buy a special Inari-zushi (稲荷寿司) offering, as the fried tofu is believed to be the favorite food of the fox messengers who guard the shrine.
