Kamo Kyokusui no En | 加茂曲水宴

The Kamo Kyokusui no En (賀茂曲水宴) at Kamigamo Shrine (上賀茂神社) is a breathtaking recreation of an elegant Heian Period garden party, first revived in 1994 to celebrate the shrine’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This ritual is held in the Shimeigami (神明紙) garden, specifically designed with a winding stream called a Kyokusui (曲水) to facilitate a high courtly game of poetry and wine. Historically, this event was a way for the nobility to demonstrate their literary prowess while seeking divine purification from the Kamo (賀茂) deities who guard the north of the capital.

The central figures are the Kajin (歌人), or poets, who sit along the mossy banks of the stream dressed in magnificent Sokutai (束帯) and Junihitoe (十二単) robes. You will see small, bird shaped lacquered cups called Oshidori (鴛鴦) floating downstream, carrying sake toward each participant. The challenge is a test of wit and grace: the poet must compose a Waka (和歌), a traditional 31 syllable poem—on a specific seasonal theme before the floating cup reaches their position. Once the poem is finished, they are permitted to take the cup and drink the sake in a gesture of refined celebration.

This ceremony is deeply tied to the Saio-dai (斎王代), the imperial princess surrogate who presides over the proceedings in her heavy, multi layered silk garments. Her presence serves as a living bridge to the ancient Kamo (賀茂) faith, where beauty and literature were offered as prayers for peace. Unlike the energetic street festivals of Kyoto, this event is defined by an eerie, focused silence broken only by the sound of the running water and the rustle of silk. Visitors often seek to catch a glimpse of the finished calligraphy scrolls, as the poems are considered temporary vessels for the Kami (神) to communicate with the human world.
