Ōka-sai | 桜花祭

The Oka sai (Cherry Blossom Festival) at Hirano Shrine is Kyoto's oldest continuously observed festival, tracing its origins back to 985 AD during the reign of Emperor Kazan. While the shrine was established in 794 AD to protect the new capital, this specific celebration was created to honor the Kami (deities) of life and the prosperity of the imperial household. It is rooted in the ancient belief that the blooming cherry trees are the dwelling places of ancestral spirits, making the shrine a sacred site where the boundary between the living and the divine thins during the spring equinox.

The centerpiece of the event is a massive Shinko Procession (神幸祭) featuring over 200 participants dressed in authentic period attire. You will see the Horen (鳳輦), a magnificent phoenix topped imperial carriage, flanked by Yoroi Kiba Musha (鎧騎馬武者) which are samurai warriors in full traditional armor mounted on horseback. Among the most striking figures are the Tenpyo no Orihime (天平の織姫), maidens dressed in the elegant styles of the 8th century representing the legendary weaving princesses who brought textile mastery to Japan. This moving museum winds through the neighborhood to spread the protective energy of the shrine's deities to the local community.

This festival is the historical reason why Hirano Shrine is considered the birthplace of Hanami (flower viewing) culture in Japan. During the Edo Period, the site became so famous for its rare blossoms that it was the first place to offer Yozakura (夜桜), or nighttime illumination, a practice that defines modern Japanese spring. Legend says that certain rare trees on the grounds, such as the Sakigake zakura (魁桜), are the heralds of the season and their blooming signals the official start of spring for all of Kyoto. Visitors often seek out the Goshuin (御朱印) stamps specifically designed for this day, which are believed to carry the luck of the Saki hoko spirits for the coming year.
