Seiryū-e (Blue Dragon Festival)

The Seiryū-e (Blue Dragon Festival) at Kiyomizu-dera Temple is a relatively young tradition, first established in 2000 AD to celebrate the completion of a major temple restoration. Despite its modern start, the festival is rooted in ancient Feng Shui principles where Kyoto is guarded by four divine beasts; the Blue Dragon (Seiryū) is the guardian of the East. You are witnessing a ritual based on the legend that a dragon descends every night to drink from the temple's Otowa Waterfall, a sacred spring that has flowed for over 1,200 years.

The centerpiece of the procession is a massive 18-meter-long dragon, covered in scales inscribed with Buddhist sutras, designed by the Academy Award-winning costume designer Emi Wada. You’ll see the dragon led by a group of "night watchmen" and followed by performers dressed as the Four Heavenly Kings (Shitenno) and terrifying Yasha (demon deities). The entire group marches to the rhythmic, haunting sound of conch shells and deep chanting, weaving through the temple grounds and down into the narrow streets of the surrounding merchant district to bless the local shops and ward off disaster.

To get the best experience, you should position yourself near the Sai-mon Gate (West Gate) or along the steep Sannenzaka stairs where the dragon's winding movement is most dramatic. Keep an eye out for the moment the dragon "blesses" the crowd; the performers often dip the dragon's head toward spectators, which is believed to bring good fortune and protection from bad luck. This is one of the few times you’ll see the temple's serene atmosphere replaced by such raw, energetic folk performance, making it a perfect moment to see how Kyoto continues to create "new" traditions that feel centuries old.
