Yasurai Matsuri | やすらい祭

The Yasurai Matsuri (やすらい祭) at Imamiya Shrine (今宮神社) is one of Kyoto’s three strangest festivals, originating during the Heian Period to quell the "Flower Demons" (Hana no Sei) believed to spread spring epidemics. During the transition to warmer weather, the falling cherry blossom petals were thought to carry diseases through the air. This ritual was established as a Goryo-e (御霊会), a ceremony to appease restless spirits and protect the health of the capital's citizens. It is a raw, energetic display of folk belief that has remained virtually unchanged for centuries.

The most iconic figures are the Oni (鬼), red and black demons with long, wild hair who perform a frantic, rhythmic dance to the sound of drums and flutes. They surround a large, flower decorated umbrella called a Furyu-gasa (風流傘), which is topped with cherry blossoms and peonies. These umbrellas are designed to act as spiritual magnets, luring the invisible spirits of pestilence inside so they can be trapped and pacified. You will see the demons leaping and chanting "Yasurai-bana" (やすらい花), a call meant to entice the spirits into the flowery trap.

Local tradition holds that stepping under the Furyu-gasa (風流傘) as it passes will grant you immunity from illness for the entire year. Many parents will push their children under the swinging tassels of the umbrella for a lifetime of health and protection. This festival is also famous for its connection to the Aburi-mochi (あぶり餅) shops located just outside the shrine gates, where eating the toasted rice cakes on this specific day is considered a secondary ritual for warding off bad luck. The contrast between the terrifying demon masks and the delicate spring flowers creates a visual tension that perfectly captures the ancient fear of nature's hidden powers.
