The Andaman Sea off Phuket is one of Southeast Asia’s richest fishing grounds – deep, warm and populated by species that draw anglers from every continent. Deep sea fishing in Phuket, internationally known as Big Game Fishing, is the experience for anyone who understands a fishing rod as a contest: against a Blue Marlin jumping metres out of the water, against a Mahi-Mahi pushing the line to its limit, or against a Yellowfin Tuna demanding every ounce of an experienced angler’s strength. Tours depart from Chalong Bay Pier on Phuket’s south coast – for beginners holding a deep sea rod for the first time, and for seasoned fishers chasing the next record catch.
The Andaman Sea offers a combination of conditions that few fishing regions in the world match: tropical warm water with high nutrient density, deep underwater ridges directly off Phuket’s coast, seasonal ocean currents that attract predator species in large numbers, and a coastline that creates natural fishing grounds between coral reefs, seamounts and open deepwater zones. Phuket is also strategically positioned: within one hour of departure from Chalong Bay Pier, fishing boats reach waters of 200–400 metres depth – the preferred zone for Marlin, Swordfish and pelagic game fish.
The Blue Marlin (Makaira nigricans) is the primary target of every big game angler in the Andaman Sea. At weights of 80–300 kg and with a fighting spirit that can mean drills of an hour or more, it is the undisputed highlight of deep sea fishing in Phuket. The Black Marlin is rarer but even larger – documented Andaman catches occasionally exceed 400 kg. Both species jump spectacularly when hooked – a sight that leaves even experienced anglers speechless. Marlin season: March to October.
The Mahi-Mahi (also called Dorado or Dolphin Fish) is the favourite of many Phuket fishing guests: spectacular in colouration (vivid gold-blue-green), lightning-fast at the lure and absolutely outstanding on the grill at the end of the day. Mahi-Mahi fight like fish twice their weight – a perfect first catch for beginners wanting the genuine experience of a deep sea drill without years of practice. Best season: November to April, though available year-round.
The Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) is the backbone of Phuket deep sea fishing in the dry season. Compact build, explosive power and sustained resistance make it one of the most technically demanding catches in the Andaman Sea. Specimens between 30 and 100 kg are regularly reported – and the drill lasts accordingly. Fresh tuna sashimi on board at the end of the day is the well-earned reward.
The Wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) holds the speed record in the Andaman Sea – documented attacks on lures at over 80 km/h. Its first run strips line faster than any other species in these waters. Wahoo strikes are violent and unmistakable; landing one is a badge of honour even for experienced big game anglers.
The Swordfish is nocturnal and pursued by specialist night-fishing charters. Barracuda, King Mackerel and Snapper round out the species list – ideal for bottom fishing and lighter tackle, and consistent year-round targets for guests who prefer a broader variety of action rather than the pure pursuit of big game.
Trolling is the classic deep sea method and the most common technique on Phuket fishing tours: multiple lines with different lures – artificial baits, natural bait, squid – are deployed behind a slowly moving boat. The boat cruises through the most productive waters until a predator strikes and the rod bends. Trolling is the most effective method for Marlin, Mahi-Mahi and Wahoo – and ideal for beginners, as the crew handles all preparation and hands over the rod only once there is a strike.
Bottom fishing presents bait on the seabed in depths of 50–150 metres, on the coral and rock grounds off Phuket’s coast. Target species are various Snapper, Grouper and Barracuda. Calmer and more patient than trolling, but with the possibility of unexpected catches and consistent action throughout the session. Bookable on request as the primary method or as a complement to trolling.
Jigging is the most technically demanding method: a heavy metal lure (jig) is worked vertically through the water column with rhythmic upward and downward movements, imitating an injured bait fish. Target species are Tuna, Wahoo and pelagic predators at depths of 100–300 metres. Recommended for anglers with experience who want to actively work the deep zones rather than wait for a trolling strike.
The fishing charter TIP works with – Prasert Seri Fishing Tour – has been operating in Phuket waters for over 19 years. The captain’s knowledge of the Andaman Sea is not learned from charts but from decades of daily departures: seasonal current shifts, the underwater ridges where Marlin and Tuna congregate, the months when specific species peak in specific zones. This accumulated local knowledge is the difference between a productive fishing day and a long boat ride. The crew speaks English throughout, provides thorough instruction for beginners and brings the right equipment for whatever target species is in season.
No fishing operation can guarantee a catch – that is the nature of fishing everywhere in the world. The crew of Phuket’s deep sea fishing tours uses every resource available: local knowledge, up-to-date species sightings, optimal bait choice and tactical positioning. On days when fish are simply not biting, the boat is still out on the Andaman Sea – one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the world – with excellent food, great company and the anticipation that every cast or line could change the day. That is fishing.

No experience necessary. The crew walks beginners through every step: how to hold the rod, how to react at the moment of a strike and how to fight a fish to the surface without losing it. Trolling is the ideal starting point – all preparation is handled by the crew, and the angler is brought in only when there is action. Many guests who board having never held a deep sea rod leave having landed a Mahi-Mahi or Tuna and immediately wanting to book again.
For anglers with experience, the Andaman Sea delivers genuine challenges: Marlin drills of an hour or more, Tuna pushing the rod to its limit and the possibility of catches simply not available in European or North American waters. International brand equipment is provided; specialised tackle for jigging is available on request.
The most comfortable conditions on the water: calm sea, little swell and clear skies. Ideal for first-time fishers and families. Good season for Mahi-Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo. The most consistently enjoyable fishing experience in terms of conditions.
The Andaman Sea’s Marlin season begins in March and peaks between May and August. Anyone specifically targeting Blue Marlin or Swordfish books during this window. The sea can be rougher than in the dry season – seasickness medication is recommended. The potential catch compensates for any discomfort.
"An unforgettable experience. The crew was professional, funny and really knew their fishing spots. I caught a beautiful tuna after about an hour, and even though we didn't land a marlin, the excitement was incredible. The lunch on board was fresh and tasty, and the views of the Andaman Sea were breathtaking. Highly recommend for anyone who loves being out on the water."
"This trip was a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. The captain and his team were very experienced and helped me improve my fishing technique. I didn't have much luck catching big game fish, but watching a sailfish jump near the boat was thrilling. The snorkeling stop was also a nice surprise. Great value for money and a fun day overall."
"Such a fantastic day! Even as a complete beginner, I felt comfortable from the moment we left the pier. The crew explained everything clearly and made the experience enjoyable start to finish. My husband caught a huge barracuda and we both had so much fun cruising through the islands. Definitely one of the best tours we booked in Phuket."
