Scooter Rental in Phuket: Prices, Models, Licence and Insurance

Scooter rental on Phuket starts at 250 THB per day for the Honda Scoopy 110 and reaches 1,000 THB per day for the Yamaha XMAX 300. The deposit is 4,000 THB, delivery in Patong and Kathu is free, and a rental day is 24 hours from handover. You need a motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit with category A — a car licence does not cover a scooter, and helmets have been compulsory for rider and passenger since 1 June 2025.

No hidden day rate, no verbal agreement at the kerb: the four models, their prices, the insurance limits and the fines are set out below, and each figure carries its source.

Honda PCX 160: what makes it the tourer of the range?

The PCX 160 is the only Honda in the range with ABS, carries an 8.1-litre tank and a longer seat, and costs 300 THB per day — the same as the Click 160, with more comfort.

  • Engine: 157 cc, 15 hp. 🟢
  • Brakes: ABS. 🟢
  • Tank: 8.1 litres — the largest tank of the three Hondas. 🟢
  • Weight: 132 kg. 🟢
  • Remote control. 🟢
  • Colour shown on the product page: anthracite / dark grey; other colours on request. 🟢
  • Price: 300 THB per day, 1,980 per week, 3,700 per two weeks, 6,000 per 30 days. 🟢

ABS is the single specification on this page that measurably reduces the risk of a locked front wheel on a wet surface. In the south-west monsoon, roughly May to October, that is most of the year. 🟡

  • Tank: 4.2 litres. 🟢
  • Transmission: automatic, no gear shifting. 🟢

Yamaha XMAX 300: who should pay 1,000 THB a day?

The XMAX 300 is the only scooter in the range with 28 hp, a 13-litre tank and ABS as standard. It costs 1,000 THB per day and carries a 10,000 THB deposit — it is a motorcycle in scooter bodywork, not a beginner’s vehicle.

  • Engine: 292 cc, 28 hp. 🟢
  • Brakes: ABS. 🟢
  • Tank: 13 litres — the longest range in the range. 🟢
  • Weight: stated as 180 kg / 193 kg on the product page. 🟢

Which licence do I need to ride a rented scooter in Phuket?

You need two documents: a valid motorcycle licence from your home country and an International Driving Permit carrying category A. A car licence does not cover a scooter, and there is no engine-size exception.

  • Required: national motorcycle licence plus International Driving Permit with category A. 🟢
  • There is no exception for small engines. A 110 cc scooter requires the same category as a 292 cc one. 🟢
  • Automatic transmission is not an exception either. Every motorised two-wheeler requires a motorcycle licence. 🟢
  • A category B car licence, with or without IDP, does not authorise you to ride any scooter. An IDP inherits the categories of the licence it was issued from. 🟢
  • A national licence alone, without IDP, is not accepted. 🟡
  • Some sources state that Thai authorities recognise an international licence for 30 days from entry. Treat this as unconfirmed and carry the IDP regardless. 🟡
  • Since 2025 a rental company that hands a scooter to a rider without the correct licence can itself be fined 2,000 THB. 🟡

What riding without category A costs you

  • Fine at a police checkpoint: around 1,000 THB in Phuket. 🟡
  • Failing to produce a licence when asked: 2,000 THB. 🟡
  • Your insurance cover can be declined. Thai insurers may refuse a claim when the rider holds no valid licence for the vehicle — this applies to the compulsory cover as well as to any voluntary policy. 🟢
  • Full personal liability for damage in the event of an accident. 🟡

The fine is the small part of this list. The loss of cover is the part that can cost you a five-figure sum.

Legal basis for the licence requirement and the fines: Thai Land Traffic Act; enforcement practice in Phuket documented by local sources. Your own page covers the current fine schedule: New Traffic Fines in Thailand — Helmet Laws Now Stricter. 🟢

Do police checkpoints actually happen in Phuket?

Yes. Fixed checkpoints and mobile patrols operate regularly on Phuket, concentrated in Patong, Kata and Karon and particularly at night. They check helmets, licence category and vehicle registration.

  • Checkpoints are routine in the tourist areas, not an exception. 🟡
  • The three most common reasons for being stopped: no helmet, no licence in the correct category, riding without headlights. 🟡
  • Night checks additionally test for alcohol. 🟡
  • Fines can be paid at the police station against a receipt. On-the-spot payments happen and are lower than the official maximum. 🟡
  • Local sources report that in Phuket alone more than 20,000 foreign nationals were recorded for unlicensed riding during the 2025–2026 enforcement period. This is a single third-party figure and is not independently confirmed. 🟡

Carry all three documents on every ride, including the 500 metres to the beach: national licence, International Driving Permit, and a copy of your passport showing the entry stamp.

What does the insurance really pay — and what does it never pay?

Every scooter carries the Thai compulsory insurance Por Ror Bor. It pays for injuries to people only. It never pays for damage to the scooter, and never for damage to third-party property. Medical costs are covered up to 80,000 THB per person once liability is settled.

Por Ror Bor under the Motor Victims Protection Act B.E. 2535 (1992). These per-person amounts have applied since April 2020; from 1 January 2026 the total payout ceiling per accident was raised to at least 20 million THB for mass-casualty events. Annual premium for a motorcycle: roughly 161 to 646 THB depending on engine size. 🟡

What voids the cover

  • Riding without a valid licence in the correct category. 🟢
  • Riding under the influence of alcohol. 🟢
  • Leaving Phuket island. 🟢
  • Riding outside the agreed rental period. 🟢
  • Gross negligence. 🟢

Supplementary insurance

You can add a voluntary policy at booking. It covers damage to the rented scooter, damage to third-party vehicles, and higher medical sums.

Our terms and conditions recommend that you hold your own travel and health insurance in addition. Por Ror Bor and the supplementary policy do not replace it. 🟢

How high is the deposit, and when do I get it back?

The deposit is 4,000 THB for the three Honda models and 10,000 THB for the Yamaha XMAX 300. It is refundable at the end of the rental period, and you can pay it on delivery or online in advance.

  • Honda Scoopy 110, Honda Click 160, Honda PCX 160: 4,000 THB. 🟢
  • Yamaha XMAX 300: 10,000 THB. 🟢
  • Refundable at the end of the rental period. 🟢
  • Payment options in the booking form: pay on delivery, or pay online in advance. 🟢
  • The deposit is not reduced by taking out supplementary insurance — the two are separate items. 🟢

Bring the deposit in cash or clarify the payment method before arrival. The product pages do not state whether card payment is accepted for the deposit. 🟡

Where is delivery free, and what does it cost elsewhere?

Delivery is free in Patong and Kathu. For rentals of one to six days a flat delivery charge of 150 THB applies. Outside these zones, ask us before you book.

The Yamaha XMAX 300 lists Patong only, the three Hondas list Kathu and Patong. If that difference is intentional, say so; if it is an oversight, align the four product pages. 🟢

How long is one rental day, and when does it start?

One rental day is 24 hours and begins at handover or collection — not at midnight, and not at the start of the calendar day.

  • A scooter collected at 15:00 on Monday is due back at 15:00 on Tuesday for one rental day. 🟢
  • Every additional hour counts toward the next rental day. 🟢
  • The delivery flat rate of 150 THB applies to rentals of one to six days; from seven days it does not. 🟢

How do I ride safely on Phuket's roads?

Eight rules cover almost every accident we hear about: helmet strapped on, headlights on at all times, no alcohol, slower in the rain, and no riding on the shoulder. The rest is anticipation.

Ride a Scooter Safely in Phuket – 8 Essential Tips from Local Experts

Riding a scooter is one of the best ways to explore Phuket, offering complete freedom and flexibility. However, Phuket’s roads require confidence, awareness, and responsible riding. Follow these practical safety tips to enjoy your holiday while reducing unnecessary risks.

1. Always Wear a Helmet

Wearing a helmet is mandatory in Thailand for both riders and passengers. Police regularly carry out roadside checks, and riding without a helmet can result in a fine. More importantly, a properly fitted helmet provides vital protection in the event of an accident. Every scooter rental from TIP includes helmets for your safety.

One of the biggest adjustments for many visitors is driving on the left-hand side of the road. Take extra care during your first few kilometres, especially at intersections, roundabouts, and when overtaking. Ride slowly until you feel comfortable with the local traffic flow.

Phuket’s roads can become extremely slippery during tropical rain, particularly on painted road markings, manhole covers, and smooth concrete surfaces. Reduce your speed, increase your following distance, and brake gently using both brakes. Scooters equipped with ABS or CBS, such as the Honda PCX 160, Honda Click 160, and Yamaha XMAX 300, provide additional braking stability in wet conditions.

In Thailand, red-and-white painted kerbs indicate a strict no-parking and no-stopping zone. Vehicles parked in these areas may be fined or removed, even if left unattended for only a few minutes.

5. Check Your Scooter Before Every Ride

Before setting off, take a moment to adjust your mirrors, test both brakes, and check the fuel level. These simple safety checks only take a few seconds but can make your journey significantly safer.

Roads leading to popular attractions such as Karon Viewpoint, Big Buddha, and Promthep Cape include steep uphill and downhill sections. Reduce your speed before descending, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and apply both brakes smoothly. Avoid sudden braking, particularly after rainfall.

Thailand has strict drink-driving laws, and police regularly conduct alcohol checkpoints. Riding under the influence significantly increases the risk of accidents, may invalidate your insurance coverage, and can lead to severe legal penalties. The safest choice is simple: never drink and ride.

Rental scooters are insured for use on Phuket Island only. Leaving the island via the Sarasin Bridge may invalidate your insurance coverage and breaches the rental agreement. If you plan to travel beyond Phuket, please contact us to discuss suitable transportation options.

What has changed in the helmet rules since June 2025?

Since 1 June 2025 a rider or passenger without a helmet is fined up to 2,000 THB each. If both ride without one, the fine rises to 4,000 THB. A helmet with the chin strap open counts as not worn.

  • In force since 1 June 2025 as part of the Royal Thai Police „Safe Roads Project”. 🟡
  • The rule applies to every ride, including 500 metres to the beach. 🟡
  • Children require a helmet in their own size. 🟡
  • Enforcement is concentrated on busy roads, known accident spots and areas near schools. 🟡
  • In 2024, 84 per cent of injured motorcycle riders in Thailand were not wearing a helmet. 🟡

How many people may ride, and what about luggage and children?

Thai law allows one passenger, so two people in total on the scooter. Both must wear a helmet. Anything beyond that is illegal, whatever you may see on the road.

  • Maximum one passenger: two people on the scooter in total. 🟢
  • Both rider and passenger require a helmet, each fined separately if missing. 🟢
  • You will regularly see three or four people on one scooter in Thailand. That is not legal, and enforcement is uneven. 🟡
  • Luggage belongs under the seat or in the top case, not on the handlebars. 🟢
  • Children require a helmet in their own size. Our product conditions exclude pregnant travellers and people with back problems from all four models. 🟢

Is the scooter delivered with a full tank?

Yes. Every scooter is delivered with a full tank and on a regular maintenance schedule.

Tank size and what it means in practice
ModelTankPractical consequence
Honda Scoopy 1104.2 lRefuel on longer island loops
Honda Click 1605.5 lSufficient for a full day of island riding
Honda PCX 1608.1 lFewest fuel stops of the Hondas
Yamaha XMAX 30013 lLongest range in the fleet

Fuel is not included in the rental price. Return the scooter at the fuel level stated in your rental agreement. 🟡

May I take the rental scooter off Phuket?

No. Our rental scooters are insured for use on Phuket island only. Crossing the Sarasin Bridge can void the insurance cover and breaches the rental agreement.

  • The insurance cover is limited to Phuket island. 🟢
  • Leaving the island breaches the rental agreement. 🟢
  • If you plan a trip to the mainland, ask us and we will arrange suitable transport for you instead. 🟢

Who should rent a scooter — and who should not?

Rent a scooter if you hold a category A licence, have ridden a two-wheeler before, and want to reach beaches and viewpoints on your own schedule. Do not rent one if you have never ridden, if you are travelling with small children, or if you do not have the licence.

✔ A scooter is right for you if

  • You hold a motorcycle licence and an IDP with category A
  • You have ridden a scooter or motorcycle before
  • You want to reach Nai Harn, Ya Nui or the viewpoints without waiting for a driver
  • You are staying seven days or longer and the weekly rate beats daily taxis
  • You are a confident rider in rain and in traffic that does not keep to lanes

✘ Book something else if

  • You have never ridden a two-wheeler — no holiday is the place to learn
  • You hold a car licence only. A category B IDP does not cover a scooter
  • You are pregnant or have back problems — our own product conditions exclude both
  • You are travelling with children who would need their own helmets
  • You plan to ride at night after drinking
  • You want to reach Khao Lak, Krabi or the mainland

If any of the right-hand column applies, a tour with a driver costs less than an accident: Phuket city tour without shopping stops — six stops, from 1,790 THB, maximum eight guests.

What do I need to bring to the handover?

Three documents for the handover, and the same three on every ride: your passport — a copy is accepted for the handover — your national licence, and your International Driving Permit with category A.

  • Passport, a copy is accepted for the rental agreement. 🟢
  • National driving licence. 🟢
  • International Driving Permit with category A. 🟢
  • Deposit: 4,000 THB, or 10,000 THB for the Yamaha XMAX 300. 🟢
  • While riding, additionally carry a copy of your passport showing the entry stamp. 🟡

What do riders ask before renting a scooter in Phuket?

Sixteen questions, answered in the same order in English and in German, and identical in the visible text and in the FAQ markup.

What does a scooter cost per day in Phuket?

Honda Scoopy 110: 250 THB. Honda Click 160 and Honda PCX 160: 300 THB each. Yamaha XMAX 300: 1,000 THB. Weekly rates are 1,600, 1,980, 1,980 and 6,300 THB. A rental day is 24 hours and starts at handover.

What licence do I need to ride a rented scooter in Phuket?

A valid motorcycle licence from your home country plus an International Driving Permit with category A. A car licence does not cover a scooter, and there is no engine-size exception for 110 cc. Without category A you are riding unlicensed.

How much is the deposit?

4,000 THB for the Honda Scoopy 110, Honda Click 160 and Honda PCX 160. 10,000 THB for the Yamaha XMAX 300. The deposit is refundable at the end of the rental period.

Is a helmet included and is it compulsory?

Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger under Section 122 of the Thai Land Traffic Act. Since 1 June 2025 the fine is up to 2,000 THB per person, and up to 4,000 THB if both ride without one. A helmet with the chin strap open counts as not worn. The Honda Click 160 comes with two helmets; ask us about helmet availability on the other models before booking.

What does the insurance actually cover?

Every scooter carries the Thai compulsory insurance Por Ror Bor. It pays for injuries to people only, never for damage to the scooter or to third-party property. Medical costs are covered up to 80,000 THB per person once liability is settled, and up to 30,000 THB per person immediately without fault being established. Death or total permanent disability is covered up to 500,000 THB per person.

Does the insurance pay if I ride without the correct licence?

No. Insurers in Thailand can decline a claim when the rider does not hold a valid licence for the vehicle. Riding without category A therefore costs you the fine and the cover.

Where is delivery free?

Delivery is free in Patong and Kathu. For rentals of one to six days a delivery flat rate of 150 THB applies. Outside these zones, ask us before booking.

Can I take the scooter off Phuket?

No. The rental scooters are insured for use on Phuket only. Crossing the Sarasin Bridge can void the cover and breaches the rental agreement.

How long is one rental day?

A rental day is 24 hours and begins at handover or collection, not at midnight.

How many people may ride on one scooter?

Thai law allows one passenger, so two people in total on the scooter. Both must wear a helmet.

What documents do I need at handover?

Your passport — a copy is accepted — your national licence, and your International Driving Permit with category A. Carry all three while riding, together with a copy of your passport showing the entry stamp.

Is the scooter delivered with a full tank?

Yes. Every scooter is delivered with a full tank and on a regular maintenance schedule. Tank sizes are 4.2 litres on the Scoopy, 5.5 litres on the Click 160, 8.1 litres on the PCX 160 and 13 litres on the XMAX 300.

Who should not rent a scooter?

Our own product conditions exclude pregnant travellers, people with back problems, and anyone without an International Driving Permit. If you have never ridden a two-wheeler, book the Honda Scoopy 110 and practise off the main roads first, or take a tour with a driver instead.

What is the fine for riding without a licence?

Riding without the correct licence is fined at around 1,000 THB in Phuket, and failing to produce a licence when asked is 2,000 THB. Since 2025 a rental company that hands a scooter to an unlicensed rider can itself be fined 2,000 THB.

Which scooter is right for two people?

For two adults on longer routes take the Honda PCX 160 or the Yamaha XMAX 300. Both have a longer seat, more storage and more power. The Scoopy 110 at 94 kg is the better choice for a single rider in town.

Do police checkpoints happen in Phuket?

Yes. Fixed checkpoints and mobile patrols operate regularly, concentrated in Patong, Kata and Karon and particularly at night. They check helmets, licence category and vehicle registration.

What Is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

Before renting a scooter in Phuket, make sure you have the correct licence. Under Thai law, foreign visitors must carry a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their original national driving licence. For all scooters and motorcycles, an International Motorcycle Licence (Class A) is required.

A standard car driving licence is not sufficient to legally ride a scooter or motorcycle in Thailand, even if some rental companies do not clearly explain this requirement.

For the Yamaha XMAX 300, a valid motorcycle licence is mandatory without exception. Police checkpoints are common throughout Phuket, and officers regularly inspect driving licences. Riding without the correct licence can result in fines and, more importantly, may invalidate your insurance coverage in the event of an accident.

What Happens If You Ride Without the Correct Licence?

  • Fines at police checkpoints.
  • Your travel or vehicle insurance may become invalid.
  • You may be personally liable for accident-related costs and damages.
  • Additional legal complications can arise following a traffic accident.

Our recommendation is simple: bring a valid International Driving Permit with Motorcycle Class A. This allows you to enjoy your holiday in Phuket safely, legally, and with complete peace of mind.
