CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AT WOODLAWN SCHOOL:
Athletic Director
Woodlawn School seeks a highly motivated Athletic Director to join a growing independent school community who knows the value of a vibrant sports program in young lives. This is a 12-month position, beginning July 1, 2025 (or earlier). The Athletic Director/Teacher will be an inspiring, compassionate leader, who is a detail-oriented proactive communication manager who promotes an exciting vision for Woodlawn athletics.
Woodlawn currently fields teams in ten interscholastic sports, along with several club, and budding sport clinic programs. We are a member of the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA) and Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA) conference, competing at the 1A level. For a young school, small in numbers, our teams and individual athletes have accomplished remarkable things.
The Director of Athletics, as a member of the senior leadership team reporting to the Head of School, is responsible for organizing and overseeing athletics program budgets, personnel, and facilities. Woodlawn School is financially secure and enjoying remarkable growth. The next AD will be expected to support and sustain this momentum by establishing ambitious new program goals, creating a cohesive athletic department philosophy, hiring and developing outstanding coaches, communicating effectively with all stakeholders, and expanding sports offerings and facilities.
The Athletic Director position will also entail some teaching duties, and preference will be given to candidates who enjoy designing physical education curriculum and collaborating with others.
The AD will work closely with teachers to develop instruction and activities strategically aligned to foster lifelong health and wellness, the prosocial values of teamwork, persistence, resilience, good sportsmanship, and prepare student-athletes for competitive opportunities in 5th through 12th grades. As leader, ambassador, and spokesman for all interscholastic sports, the Athletic Director develops coaching standards, supervises and supports coaches in meeting those standards, supports the hiring of faculty who can coach, develops training and conditioning programs for student-athletes, oversees facilities and field maintenance, and manages the department budget.
Woodlawn’s interscholastic athletic program features Middle and Upper School teams in Soccer (Boys and Girls), Cross Country and Track (Coed), Volleyball (Girls), Basketball (Boys and Girls), Swimming (Coed), Golf (Coed), Tennis (Boys and Girls), Flag Football (Coed), Volleyball Club (Boys), and a Baseball (MS Boys Co-op) team.
Most importantly, the AD models the highest level of sportsmanship and school spirit to rally support in the school and local community. The school seeks candidates with vision, ambition, integrity, and strong work ethic, who are program builders; and want to grow as leaders while contributing to an exciting transformation at Woodlawn School.
Candidates may hold post-secondary and/or graduate degrees in various fields of education, leadership, sports management, physical education, and/or similar fields. They must have substantial records of success as coaches and at least three years of experience in athletic administration and leadership, ideally at independent schools.
The Athletic Director's roles and responsibilities:
- Lead a strategic planning process to advance the scholar-athlete profile throughout school life.
- Develop Lower School extracurricular programs that encourage sports participation at school and in the local community.
- Help healthcare professionals ensure that proper measures are in place to protect athletes.
- Lead by activity and example in developing, organizing, supervising, and evaluating all aspects of the school's intramural and interscholastic athletic programs.
- Establish standards that unify coaches and support the school’s educational mission through the development of students as scholar-athletes.
- Supervise, train, and mentor coaches who are committed to the highest levels of professionalism.
- With Operations staff, oversee sports equipment and facilities maintenance, security, planning, and rental opportunities.
- Assist the Head of School and administrators in faculty hiring to include excellent coaches.
- Submit regular sports updates and information to the Communication team for publication.
- Prepare and manage the athletic program’s budget.
- Schedule athletic contests, arrange for transportation, and hire officials.
- Join the college counseling office in supporting student-athletes in their aspirations in college sports.
- Help the admission office in attracting prospective students for enrollment.
- Represent the school in various state, regional, and national athletic associations.
- Maintain team and individual sports records and share them with the Director of Advancement and Communications for historical purposes.
- Help coaches develop athletes' seasonal goals with documentation, statistics, and records.
- Revise the coaches’ manual as needed each year and meet with coaches to review information and standards in detail.
- Revise the athletic parent handbook as needed each year and meet with families to set expectations and review information in detail.
- Organize off-campus athletic programs and coordinate them with the division leaders.
- Oversee distribution, collection, cleaning, repair, and storage of uniforms and equipment.
- Take responsibility for the health and safety of all students in the athletic program.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School and support the school's leadership.

Woodlawn School is seeking an experienced music teacher for the 2025-2026 school year. Music teachers lay a foundation for a lifelong love of, and appreciation for music by introducing basic melodic and rhythmic concepts, instrument types and families, vocal posture and breathing, and numerous other topics and skills. Full and/or part-time availability will be considered.
Performing Art professionals have the unique opportunity to collaborate with other team teachers to bring music and drama into history, technology, and other areas to provide further context and enhanced learning for students, through our project-based learning approach. Our teachers are encouraged to bring their own passion into the classroom and share with students enthusiastically and innovatively to produce extraordinary outcomes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Further develops, implements, assesses, and modifies, as necessary, a dynamic music program that aligns with Woodlawn's mission, vision, and values.
- Prepares and implements music lessons for grades PK - 5th, including vocal instruction, training with classroom instruments, and general musicianship including theory, composition, and music history.
- Shares a passion for music instruction with middle and upper school students through an elective course offering each trimester
- Provides a variety of learning experiences so that students demonstrate skills and concepts learned through individual and group performances and a variety of communication mediums.
- Provides and supervises opportunities for students to demonstrate individually and in ensembles the skills and talents developed in the music program, bringing pride of accomplishment to students and the school.
- Engages students in differentiated learning experiences for the range of skill levels and developmental needs found in the classroom, managing, when appropriate, multiple instructional activities simultaneously.
- Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are age-appropriate music learning experiences.
- Leads instrumental ensembles.
- Directs and coordinates performances in school concerts, festivals, and community events.
- Plans, rehearses, and directs students in musical programs for the school.
- Serves as the Musical Director for the annual Middle/Upper and Lower School Musical theater productions.
- Listens and responds to student and parent concerns in a responsible, constructive and resourceful manner.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment during class time.
- Communicate effectively with students and families about student progress and upcoming events and performances.
- Evaluates each student's musical growth and performance on a regular basis. Remains engaged in school, department, and/or individual regular professional development opportunities.
- Fosters a joy and enthusiasm for music-making throughout the school.
- Promote both vocal and instrumental music among students, both in and out of school, and create extra-curricular music opportunities.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music and/or Education.
- Minimum 2 - 3 years teaching experience (independent school preferred).
- Knowledge of a variety of music styles, repertoire, and teaching methodologies is necessary.
- Ability to play and teach guitar is preferred.
- Ability to play and teach piano/keyboard is preferred.
- Model and develop good vocal technique as appropriate for all ages.
- Ability to sing and play additional various musical instruments.
- Sufficient training and experience to provide the ability to teach age-appropriate music curriculum to a level consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Primary Responsibilities:

Design and implement individualized and small-group academic support programs that empower students to reach their full potential. Guide students in developing essential academic skills, including critical reading, analytical writing, time management, and effective study strategies.
- Case Management: Assess the academic needs of individual students. Work with division leaders, school counselor, teachers, students, and parents; collect data, obtain relevant information, and manage documents on academic, emotional, physical, and other issues that necessitate interventions; convene meetings with involved persons and professionals; create the accommodation plan; and assure all involved understand the plan and can implement it. Create and maintain comprehensive Student Learning Plans that reflect each student's unique learning profile. Monitor student progress and adapt support strategies to ensure continued growth.
- Develop Personalized Education Plans and Provide Intervention: Work directly with individuals and small groups of students who need modifications, accommodations, or individual academic interventions. This may include executive functioning and/or academic skills.
- School-Wide Initiatives: Organize, lead, and support teachers with school-wide initiatives to foster executive functioning skills, educational growth, and independence. Offer and/or organize family education nights as needed.
- Collaborative Partnership: Partner with School Counselor and Division Directors to provide support, education, and continuity of services for students and families. Be a team player and leader in supporting students and teachers on their educational journey.
- Data Management: Schedule and attend parent/guardian-teacher meetings as needed to support student learning. Maintain detailed and organized notes of communications and relevant student support information.
- Manage and coordinate in partnership with the Division Director, School Counselor, and the Student Support Teams.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

SETTING THE FOUNDATION
OUR FOUNDING
Founded in 2002, Woodlawn first began with just seven students and two small buildings and opened its doors for the first time in the fall of that year. Just two years later, 70 students were enrolled and Woodlawn had already established a reputation as a place where high academic standards led to independent, lifelong learning.
