About the Weather

Wow, the weather has its own FAQ section. Isn’t that a bit excessive?

Unfortunately New Zealand is known for having ‘four seasons in one day’– it’s a little country that packs a whole lot of weather and excitement into it.  That’s why we have comprehensive weather planning processes in place.

What happens if we book and the weather prevents flying?

We ask all guests to call us on arrival to Queenstown to discuss the latest weather forecast.  If the weather is not looking good, flights can be moved to the next probable departure time or the next fine weather day.  We’ll work with you to ensure everything can be done to get you in the air.

So is that why it’s important we call you to confirm everything?

Yes it is.  We ask all guests to call us after they arrive in Queenstown.  At that time we’ll discuss the latest weather forecast with them. We then ask that they call 1.5 hours before departure for a final weather check.

What happens if bad weather prevents us from flying during your entire visit to Queenstown?

Our wet weather package to Milford Sound will generally ensure you can get there no matter what the conditions are.  If all flights are grounded due to weather, then the booking will be cancelled with no charge incurred.

Temporary Fuel Surcharge (Effective 13 April 2026)

What You Need to Know

From 13 April 2026, a temporary fuel surcharge of $59 per person will be applied to all new bookings and added at checkout.

This surcharge has been introduced in response to a significant and ongoing increase in aviation fuel costs.

As we take payment on the day of travel, if the fuel surcharge is reduced or removed prior to your flight, the final price you pay will reflect this change.  If the surcharge has increased, we will honour the pricing paid at the time of booking.

Please rest assured this is a temporary measure. We are monitoring fuel prices closely and will review the surcharge regularly, with the intention of reducing or removing it as soon as conditions allow.

As always, Air Milford remains committed to delivering the same exceptional experience, service, and safety standards you know and trust.

You need to call us the morning of your flight to check the latest weather information and whether the flight is going ahead.

This is usually one hour before your flight, but please check the table below for specific call times:

Our 12-seater aircraft have a 1-2 layout, which means that three seats out of the twelve are in the ‘middle’ of the aircraft.

Advantages of these seats includes but is not limited to; allowing nervous flyers in a small plane to feel more comfortable in these seats, and getting views out of both sides of the aircraft as opposed to just one. However, we do understand that some guests would prefer not to sit in the middle!

While other operators may pride themselves for having guaranteed window seats, our team believes that our quality of aircraft, service and experience are all points of difference that helps make your experience just as unique and unforgettable.

Our child age is 2 – 12 years old. Infants 0 – 1 years fly for free, sitting on an adults lap with safety restraint, except in the instance of coach bookings, where the infants must pay for their seat for the coach segment of their excursion.

Definitely a camera, a fully charged battery and lots of free memory space!  The temperature can be quite different on the trip from Milford Sound to Queenstown too so it’s worth taking a jacket for the Milford cruise, as well as some comfortable walking shoes and some insect repellent.

Well...why wouldn’t you?  Milford and Doubtful Sounds provide a step back into our prehistoric past.  These are landscapes untouched for centuries, the type of place where you half expect dinosaurs to still roam.  Famous writer Rudyard Kipling called Milford Sound ‘the eighth wonder of the world’ with good reason – this unique environment is truly one of Earth’s best.  For most who travel here, one or two days is all they will have. Within this fleeting period it can be hard to appreciate the scale and wonder of the sounds and their surroundings.  The investment in a scenic flight from Queenstown to Milford Sound is therefore an astute one – this incredible place deserves no less.

Flights to Milford Sound operate approximately 250 days per year due to the weather.  Fiordland gets an average of 7 metres of rain (300 inches) per year and the weather is very changeable. This is why it is important you call us 1.5 hour prior to your flight departure.

To quote our good friend Dr Seuss, “Oh the places you will go!”  You’ll travel across a divide created by an almighty battle between two tectonic plates – the Australian plate to the west and the Pacific plate to the east.  The geographical turmoil created by this collision has resulted in towering mountains, deep oceans and very little between the two.  It can’t be said enough – this is a spectacular vista we are privileged to share with you.

Yes, we do – and these are popular with many passengers looking to continue on with their Milford Sound trip by coach, by hiking or by car.  You can read further information here.

Yes, we typically take a set route over the Southern Alps into Milford Sound and then a different route back on the flight to Queenstown.  These routes are changeable depending on the varying weather conditions.

If you have the time to see Milford Sound from roadsea and air, it is well worth it. One of most popular itineraries for the day (albeit a long one) is a combination sightseeing trip, which can include a coach journey, boat cruise and scenic flight.

  • Flight – The flight back from Milford takes approximately 35 minutes and you will see fantastic aerial views of Alps, glaciers, waterfalls and the impressive valleys and terrain of Milford Sound.
  • Coach – To make the most of this sightseeing trip, we recommend you join the tour on its earliest departure time from Queenstown (first coach departs at 7am). Take a wonderful drive to Milford Sound from Queenstown (your accommodation) in a comfortable, air-conditioned luxury coach.
  • Cruise – Enjoy a cruise on Milford Sound on one of the smaller boats operating in the Sound. Seats are limited on each sightseeing trip, seating and vantage points plentiful and an informative commentary provided by the friendly crew.
  • Finally, get dropped off at your accommodation and we can (almost) promise you a very good night’s sleep.

We offer flightseeing tours over Central Otago and Southland regions of New Zealand with a long-standing international reputation for having some of the best scenery and landscapes in the country.  You’ll get to see up close some of our dramatic mountain ranges (such as the Remarkables and the Southern Alps) soar across the beautiful lakes, rivers and tributaries such as Wakatipu, Clutha, Taieri and Manuherikia, swoop down across the precious Tasman and Hooker glaciers and fly across some of the most incredible scenery New Zealand’s National Parks have to offer, including the Westland, Mount Aspiring and Aoraki / Mount Cook parks.

The Southern Alps are particularly impressive by air and include New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki / Mount Cook, which towers at 3,754 metres high. With over sixteen peaks above 3,000 metres, the Alps provide plenty of adventures for mountain climbers and skiers. Quite simply – every which way you can.  If you have the time to see Milford Sound from road, sea and air it is well worth it.  One of the most popular itineraries for the day (albeit a long one) is a combination sightseeing trip. This can include a coach journey, boat cruise and then a scenic flight back to Queenstown.

Coach – To make the most of your sightseeing trip we recommend you join the tour on its earliest departure time from Queenstown (the first coach departs at 7am).  Take a wonderful drive to Milford Sound from Queenstown in a comfortable, air-conditioned luxury coach.

Your coach driver provides time for photo stops and short walks along the Milford road journey. A picnic lunch is included on the cruise which includes a sandwich, cheese & crackers, seasonal fresh fruit, crisps, a cookie, and a small chocolate bar. There is food available for purchase on the cruise, however it is suggested that you bring extra snacks along with you too. Bringing a few extra layers in a backpack is always suggested, as well as a rain jacket, non-slip shoes, and a camera. The temperature in Milford is quite similar to Queenstown, so you can dress accordingly on this day.

Cruise – You’ll then embark on a cruise on Milford Sound on one of the smaller boats operating here.  As seats are limited, there are plenty of prime vantage points and an informative commentary provided by the friendly crew.

We will be in contact with your coach driver on the day regarding the status of your flight. Therefore you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your journey! If we are unable to fly, your driver will advise you of this and you will return to Queenstown by coach. Your return time to Queenstown will be approx. 4:15pm if your flight proceeds, or approx. 7:30pm via the coach if we are unable to fly.

Flight – After the sights and sounds found sea level, it’s time to take to the air.  The flight back from Milford takes approximately 35 minutes, during which you’ll see fantastic aerial views of the Southern Alps and the glaciers, waterfalls and impressive valleys of the terrain around Milford Sound.  Finally, you’ll be dropped off at your accommodation in town for what we promise will be a sound sleep – it’s a big day and you’ll undoubtedly be exhausted and utterly content after it. Our Story.
Whats important to us.

Stephen Singleton-Ryan

Flight Coordinator

Originally from Wellington, while finishing high school and figuring out what he wanted to do, Stephen started flying at his local aero club on the Kāpiti Coast. From his first trial flight, a passion for flying quickly developed, setting him on the path to complete his commercial training at Nelson Aviation College.

Before pursuing aviation fulltime, Stephen worked across a range of roles in retail and tourism, building strong people skills and a customer-focused approach. He started his flying career at Air Milford as a Flight Coordinator, joining the team in November 2025.

Drawn to the incredible location and world-class scenery, he enjoys working with guests and hearing their post-flight stories. Outside of work, Stephen loves to stay active and make the most of the outdoors. He’s big into snow sports and motorbikes, and enjoys exploring the region whenever he gets the chance.

Paul Lups

Pilot

After a chance encounter, Paul decided to follow his dream of becoming a pilot in 2009 and obtained his commercial licence in Christchurch before moving to the Outback of Australia flying on a station.

Returning home, he became qualified as a flight instructor and then moved into Air Traffic Control for a little over a decade. Paul successfully trained up many of the Air Traffic Controllers here in Queenstown in what is known as the most difficult control operations in New Zealand.

Outside of flying, Paul has small business experience in Queenstown and has even had a hand in setting up or negotiating commercial ventures in the area. Now, keeping active with his two children easily fill the rest of his time- the hardest job of them all!
